How much CO2 is emitted to attend the UN climate change conference?
I know I may be a little bit skeptical and hard demanding, but I always wonder the real 
positive outcome from the yearly negotiations in the UN climate change conferences (COPs). For me, it always sounds like the same, Europe committing
to
reduce CO2 by substituting the use of oil with renewable energies; US, India and China trying to refuse to a boundary commitment; the developing countries demanding more “flexibility” and support to allow their development …
But I do not want to discuss about the outcomes from these conferences, but just wonder, if more than 150 State representatives (presidents, ministers…) travel to the conference -of course on an airplane-, how much CO2 does the attendance to the climate change conference produce then? which is its footprint?
I am not expert in CO2 calculation but with support from different sources in internet I found that for an intercontinental flight of approx. 15.000 km (total roundtrip) which transports 10 passengers, including aircraft and presidential companion, then just for arriving and leaving the conference, we are talking of around 35 tons of CO2 per intercontinental flight. If 150 representatives from different countries are travelling from around the world to the conference, we are talking about the emission of around 5000 tons of CO2 just for attending the conference, leaving still out of the calculation the flights from the representatives of other stakeholders (like companies, NGOs, civil society…). Then just to give us an idea of the magnitude of the impact of these conferences, 5000 tons of CO2 refer to the energy use of a small town of 385 houses in one year. http://www.yousustain.com/footprint/howmuchco2?co2=5000+tons
If the main topic and goal of the COP conferences is reducing CO2 emission, is it then congruent to produce such a quantity of emissions just in the attendance to this event? And was it until now worth it?

Cuánto CO2 se emite por asistir a la conferencia del cambio climático de la ONU?
Ya sé que soy un poco escéptica y crítica, pero siempre me prregunto cuál es el verdadero resultado positivo de las negociaciones anuales sobre el cambio climático de la ONU (COPs). Para mí, siempre suena a lo mismo: Europa comprometiéndose a reducir sus emisiones al sustituir el uso del petróleo por energías renovables y poniendo objetivos cada vez más estrictos; Estados Unidos, India y China evitando un acuerdo vinculante; y los países en desarrollo solicitándo más apoyo y flexibilidad que permita su desarrollo …
Pero no quiero discutir sobre los efectos de estas conferencia, sólamente me pregunto: si más de 150 representantes estatales (presidentes, ministros …) viajan a estas conferencias – por supuesto en avión -, entonces cuándo CO2 se emite a la atmósfera sólamente por asistir a este evento? ¿Cuál es su huella ecológica?
No soy experta en el cálculo de emisiones de CO2 pero con ayuda de algunos sitios en internet encontré que un vuelo intercontinental de aprox. 15.000 km (total ida y vuelta) que transporte 10 pasajeros, incluyendo la tripulación y acompañantes presidenciales al lugar de la conferencia se produce una cantidad de cerca de 35 tons de CO2. Si 150 representantes de los distintos países viajan desde todas partes del mundo a la conferencia, entonces estamos hablando de la emisión de aprox. 5000 tons de CO2 únicamente por asistir a la conferencia, dejando aún fuera de este cálculo los vuelos de los representantes de otros grupos de interés (como compañías, ONGs, sociedad civil …).

Si el tema y objetivo principal de estas conferencias es la reducción de CO2, ¿es entonces congruente producir dicha cantidad de emisiones sólamente por atender al evento? ¿Y ha merecido hasta ahora la pena?
